Duties: Currently, the Sea Kayak Adventures team is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic, conservation-minded individual to fill the seasonal fulltime position of Lead or Assistant Kayak Guide between June 10th and mid - September, 2016. Duties for this overnight guide position include, but are not limited to: geological, cultural and natural interpretation of the Pacific Northwest with an emphasis on bear physiology and ecology; promotion of marine ecosystem conservation; Safely guide guests by kayak in a dynamic marine environment. Perform team leader, lead boat and safety boat duties as assigned. Provide excellent risk management in remote settings. Professionally represent ROW SKA’s and its Mission, Vision and Values at all times. Work cooperatively with all team members to implement all logistical aspects of a ROW SKA trip from pack-up to clean-up in a timely manner in order to provide guests with a safe, meaningful and memorable experience. Care for, respect, and maintain ROW SKA equipment, vehicles and facilities, including guide quarters, in a neat, properly functioning, organized and presentable manner. Set-up and pack-up camp facilities such as guest tents, tables, chairs and portable toilet (when applicable) on all multi-day trips. Prepare, artfully present and clean-up all meals and dishes according to ROW menu and recipes. Lead guest activities such as hikes, storytelling, games or campfire music to enrich the guests’ experience and engage them in friendly conversation throughout the trip. Fully participate with a positive attitude in all job-related aspects during and related to a given trip, including attendance and participation in all guide meetings, debriefs, and other pre- and post-trip tasks.
Qualifications: At least one‐year previous commercial guiding experience; two years preferred; experience on multi‐day trips preferred.
- Advanced First Aid, First Responder or higher certification (a 36‐hour minimum is required; WEC, WAFA, WFR, WEMT, or EMT preferred).
- All guides must have CPR.
- Canadian citizenship or legal Canadian work permit
- ACSKG, SKGABC, CRCA, ACA, BCU certification or equivalent.
- All guides must have current tetanus and hepatitis A & B. This is a series of immunizations that takes 2‐3 months to complete.
Full‐time, full‐season guides are expected to be available for work in BC from June after the required staff training through the end of August. Occasionally there is some part‐time work available in September. For guides just starting out with SKA, a typical schedule might include multi‐day trips in Johnstone Strait and God’s Pocket Resort in July and August. Work during the entire season is unpredictable, based on bookings, and is assigned based on a variety of factors including seniority, skill level, need, etc. SKA guides typically work a rotation schedule of 2‐3 weeks of guiding, then one week off between trips. Trips are 4‐6 days in length. They are based out of the SKA warehouse in Port McNeill, BC. SKA makes no guarantees on the amount of work a guide will receive, and guides do not choose the trips they work on, but rather are assigned as needed.
