Primary Responsibilities

Guides are scheduled for a maximum 4 days of guide work each week. Based on interest and skill set, additional work may be available as either a Shuttle Driver and/or a Course Technician.

Hours:
Hours are variable and include evenings and weekends. Guides usually work three trips a day, with four trips being the maximum. Trips are approximately two hours in length and guides are expected to be on site and ready 1/2 hour before their first trip of the day and up to 1/2 after their last trip of the day (Mandatory for ancillary activities both pre and post tour).

Ecomarine is Vancouver’s full service paddlesport expert. Our world class paddling school helps thousands of people connect with the water at our two waterfront locations and select locations around the lower mainland.  The School Manager will play a critical role in by leading a team that delivers hundreds of kayak and stand up paddleboard lessons, tours and private programs.

School Manager will oversee recruitment and training for instructor and guides, as well as scheduling, mentoring and supervision of the team throughout our busy summer season (May – September).  The school manager will work closely with our sales department to ensure that we have adequate staffing for program requests.  School manager will also act as a Senior Instructor, ideally being able to teach most of Ecomarine’s sea kayak programs.  An interest and experience in Stand up Paddleboarding is also an asset.

  • Leading programs according to Ecomarine and Paddle Canada outlines and risk management policies.

Job Description & Responsibilities:

Operation and navigation of the ship

  • Conduct operations in a professional, confidence building style at all times.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of passengers in all operations. Discuss emergency protocols. Be prepared to direct any emergency situation 24 hours a day.
  • Review safety systems with crew: With incoming crew practice emergency scenarios.
  • Teaching and involving guests in boat handling activities.

Trip planning

  • Creation of itinerary for trip based upon safety, crew experience and ability, weather, tides, group preferences, published Bluewater descriptions, running condition of the vessel.

Team work and crew coordination

  • Foster a sense of teamwork amongst the crew, support learning of additional skills. Plan short daily crew meetings, or if not possible make sure there is constant communication with all crew on plans, timing, changes or operational issues.
  • Assist other crew as appropriate with cooking, cleaning and program activities.

General ships maintenance

  • Conduct daily inspections of machinery and vessel systems. Use checklists for main engine, generator, bilge spaces. Perform repairs as soon as possible.
  • Work with crew to fix issues as they arise and maintain the vessel. Supervise crew on ongoing maintenance carried out during trips.

Wild Water Adventures is seeking experienced Rafting Guides/Trip Leaders to join our 2018 team. Our rafting trips take place on the famous Kicking Horse River where you will be providing a great river experience to our guests on our Gentle, Whitewater Exciter and Maximum Horse Power Trips. British Columbia and particularly the Kicking Horse River offers some of the best pay rates in the world as well a fantastic environment to spend a summer. Guides need to enjoy interacting with guests in a professional and courteous manner and be prepared to go that extra mile to provide that unforgettable experience. Job duties include:

  • Guiding rafts down class III to IV+ whitewater rapids.
  • Responsible for gear preparation and maintenance on a daily, and ongoing, basis, delivering safety briefings and demonstrations, instructing guests on rafting techniques, controlling large groups of guests, payment and waiver introductions, following emergency and safety protocols, ensuring other guides follow emergency and safety protocols, support and training of guides, providing first aid, CPR and river rescue when necessary, completing required paperwork. 
  • Working with a team of guides ranging in size from two to twelve per trip, guiding guest groups ranging from two to one hundred guests per trip.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications: 

A minimum of 3 to 5 years guiding class IV whitewater is required, some at a Trip Leader level, as well as first aid and river rescue certification.  Some training of newer guides is required.

Salary: 

$22 - $25 / hr.
